Giveaway from 'Building a Log Cabin!'

Fall is in the air, the leaves are turning and I'm happy about my log home career so that means I have to have a giveaway! Two as a matter of fact.

Mr. Scarecrow is 1st prize, and the 2nd prize was inspired by Jen's post about "blessings" at Unglazed - a "Grateful" door hanger.

Here are the rules:
  1. Submit one favorite quote or poem as it relates to Fall.
  2. Post it here and leave a link back to your site.
  3. U.S. & Canadian residents only.
  4. Shelley's hubby Greg will decide which 2 he likes best and pick the 1st & 2nd prize winners.
  5. Contest ends midnight on Monday, September 8th, 2008.

Wouldn't you like to have me in your home?

    AUTUMN CAME

    By ripping cheeks,
    with cold breeze,
    with twitter of sparrows,
    Autumn came!

    Autumn came to cover
    shivering earth
    with colorful leaves carpet!

    Autumn floats like
    sun's epitaph

    Autumn echoed like
    farewell song of birds
    in the evening!

    Autumn touches the
    breath of last leaves
    on the verge of falling
    with warmth!

    Autumn challenges the
    confidence of the tree
who hides buds in the heart

  2. Ah, the prizes are great. You have the best blogs. :)

    Autumn Birds

The wild duck startles like a sudden thought,
And heron slow as if it might be caught.
The flopping crows on weary wings go by
And grey beard jackdaws noising as they fly.
The crowds of starnels whizz and hurry by,
And darken like a clod the evening sky.
The larks like thunder rise and suthy round,
Then drop and nestle in the stubble ground.
The wild swan hurries hight and noises loud
With white neck peering to the evening clowd.
The weary rooks to distant woods are gone.
With lengths of tail the magpie winnows on
To neighbouring tree, and leaves the distant crow
While small birds nestle in the edge below.

  3. I thought you might be interested in John Clare's bio. Like many poets, he has a rather sad one:

  6. Hey Shelley, here is my entry...it's a little prose I wrote myself....bet you couldn't tell...

    The water's cold,
    The leaves are burning,
    I'm growing old,
    My candle's burning.

The maple leaves have turned to red,
almost overnight while I snuggled in my camp bed.
The ducks are flying overhead, the wings whistle as they head south,
I stand and look up with open mouth.

    With each passing year
I watch my life go sliding by,
And on my cheek there sits a tear,
as summer ends and the ducks fly by.

It's done and gone the summer cottage season,
It passed us by fast without good reason.
Now the weekends hold less promise and fun
As I sit home and watch quarterbacks run.

But I have my memories and recollections,
Of the summer gone by, the August morning reflections,
    The fish in the lake,
The potatoes in the garden, we hope to bake.
But I wish it was still summer,
cause the wife just handed me a rake....

And oh yes the ducks above my head,
Should have shot them as they flew over, heading south,
When birds fly over, above your head,
Don't look up with an open mouth.....

  8. Fall

Up from the meadow a wind is blowing,
The wind we longed for the summer through.
The sky, which was gold and hot and glowing,
Is high above us and strangely blue.

There, where the apple tree was budding
Ready to bloom, we hear a sound
And turn to find it's an apple thudding
Heavy and hard to the sunbaked ground.

A line of geese sweeps up from the river,
Dry leaves crunch on the browning lawn.
We look at each other, surprised, and shiver
    And suddenly--swiftly--summer is gone.
