I definitely have cabin fever. When we were up at the log cabin today, I immediately wished Greg & I had brought sleepings bags to stay the night. No matter that it would have been on the OSB subflooring. We were enjoying just being there looking at the snow covered lake. A black squirrel was running around the large oak tree out front and chickadees were flying about. We also had a nice visit from our log home dealers - The Fleshers.
This past week the furnace was installed and more progress was made in the kitchen and the bathroom. Speaking of the bathroom, I thought the toilet was ready to use....ha! Greg had to go get some drinking water out of the crew's water cooler and pour it into the toilet so it would flush. Whoops! This week I expect the crew will start on the maple hardwood flooring and complete the electric and kitchen.

I live in Newfoundland, Canada and stumbled upon your blog. Very nice cabin! Cabins in Newfoundland are plentiful. Many people who already live in the country, have cabins in the woods, where they spend alot of time. I don't have a cabin, but a nice modest home with a beautiful garden and a view of the Bay of Islands and mountains which are over 500 million years old. Thank you for sharing your information with so many people from all over the world!

Oh wow! That looks so much like my parent's log cabin in Alaska which we built when I was 16! Built into the side of a hill with a wrap around deck and front loft windows. Wow! I love that home.
I'll never forget straddling logs and peeling bark off the bettle killed spruce trees. Sometimes I'd come to a nest of larve (yuck!). Those we didn't expose hatched and crawled out of the walls those next two years. Surprise!
It was all worth it!
I sure hope you have luck with the log cabin.
There are many log homes in our area but in a few years they start to look awful from weather.

I stumbled onto your blog this evening. My husband and I have been to two log home shows visiting and interviewing several of the different log home companies. I'm compiling a 3-ring binder of all of the info I've collected from the vendors we're interested in. There are so many of them. We still haven't completely made up our mind to go with a log home. We're worried about the upkeep. How are you planning on maintaining it in the years to come? The options seem limited...hire someone to stain it every other year or so for us, or do it ourselves (we're not spring chickens anymore). The information you share is good. I'll keep watching to see the completed home.

Hi there - I love hearing from others that are planning their log home too!! I also have a 3-ring binder compiled w/ information too! I have a 2nd one that helps me w/ the final planning, construction, decor, etc. My husband & I did all the same things you did - went to the log home shows, interviewed them, etc. If you go with a lighter stain then you will have to stain it every other year, if it's a little darker - then every 4-5 years. The Sascho stain was offered w/ our package. I will be talking to them this week and get their advice and tips and post it on an upcoming blog. That is so beautiful. I am having cabin fever also. MY goal for this year is to get some land where me and my family can build our own log cabin. I just recently started getting log home living in the mail and just sit and dream all day looking at it.

the log cabin i grew up in was a pre-fab from 1979. very dark with orangey/brown indoor/outdoor carpet. ~shutters~

Nice! We built our own Log Cabin here in Montana several years ago. We moved in when just the first floor was finished and have slowly completed it. It should be totally done this spring! My two oldest kids peeled bark, pounded in rebar, etc... We raised the logs one by one using our vehicles and a pully system... anyway, it was rough at times, but all worth it now! Congrats!!

My brother (the official owner) opted out of owning a "cabin" and instead had a "Lake House" roughed out by a builder. We then finished out the interior to help contain the cost.
