Greg and I went Elk Viewing this weekend. Not too far from our cabin is Gaylord's Elk Park. It is 108 acres and has approximately 70 elk along with various type of deer and even a ram. We had tried going to the Pigeon River Forest to view them in the wild - but never have any luck. So of course I have to head to the park to cherry pick some photos! :-)
Check out the rack on this bad boy!
He did a loud bugle for us and it was thrilling to hear! If you want to hear what it sounds like, check this link out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYzWmKlZtrU
Here a friend joins him asking him what is he making all that racket about. (It was over a female of course!)
I have a couple more photos to share - one of Greg feeding them that was very cute. (It was through the fence - don't worry! I didn't let him climb in there. Though I thought about it....ha,ha!)

How neat Shelley. Take it easy on poor Greg, LOL!
I don't know what kind of disposition they have, but other than the horns they don't look mean! Great shots
We love to go up to the mountains and watch and listen to the show the elk put on. I never get tired of it (o:
The pictures are wonderful as always. I so want your camera and picture taking talent! :) My husband (the hunter) came by and saw them and commented on how he would like to come across a shot like that... Men!
Take Care,
Debbie
I think that is so cool because we don't have those around here!
Wow, Shelley...what amazing shots!
Last September, for the first time in Colorado I heard that Elk call early one morning. I had no idea what it was until my BIL told me. What an unusual noise! I only wish I could have captured amazing pictures of the elk, like you did. Once again...great pictures!!
YOU GOT TO HEAR HIM BUGEL!!!!!! That is awesome. Our friends that have the ranch in Montana have herds of elk that graze, live and even have babies on it. But because they are not there all the time, it is a vacation home, usually the bugling is something they miss. I heard ONE last year while we there in the fall. I was THRILLED! They are gorgeous majestic creatures. But not fun to "happen upon" when walking through the pasture. Especially a huge male. Scared the _____ out of me! Course I scared him more and he took off after trying to stare me down. Still . . . whew!
looks like our backyard here as well :)

That. Is. AWESOME! How cool to have such a neat thing near you. We have a few buffalo farms. That first pic is SO majestic!
Amazing pics Shelley! Love the bugle call!
Awesome photos Shel!
Shelley come on out if it's elk you want. I have 21 resident elk. They are on my bad boy list right now as they decided to break the fence and have a good eat of my entire veggie garden. If they didn't like it they pulled it up anyway. Argh!!!!! I know they were here first, I gave them three large pastures all their own but they wanted my veggies. Sharon
I dare not show these to you know who. I already hear about elk
24/7. He's got another hunt planned for 2010...it's gonna be a long year.
Amazing photos! I hope school is going well and that little Scout is behaving :>)
Beautiful elks, Shelley... Even if you couldn't see them in the wild, it was neat I'm sure JUST to see them period. Wow---what a rack that one guy has.
GREAT pictures.
Hugs,
Betsy
Those bad boys are gorgeous!!!!
Soooo cool! I can't wait to hunt this year! I love watching deer and other wildlife to explore their nature! I am excited that you got to!
Love, Madison
WOW!!!!!! Incredible. I have never seen one in person before. They are magnificent.
Oh thank you so much for sharing. I think they are such beautiful majestic animals.
Shelley-I love the photo's...I actually think it is best to go to the elk viewing area to get great photo's of them. I tried to get some this summer, but my camera's zoom is not the greatest. I will head out tomorrow to see if I see any tracks, and will email you a spot if I find one!

As you already know, Dave and I LOVE Yellowstone and the best time to see Yellowstone is in the Fall when the elk are in rut. There is something about that bugling sound that thrills me, that and when we hear the wolves howl! They are massive creatures, I don't think most people realize just how big they are!
Connie
What a treat. They have beautiful faces and a bright healthy coat on them. Great shots Shelley.
Wow! They're beautiful! Great pics!
Tammy
I never thought I would come to this blog and see the words "check out the rack."
Magnificent animals though.
Absolutely fabulous photos! Love seeing those elk!
Great pictures, Shelley. You live in a beautiful part of the US to be able to see all the nature that you do.
WOW Shelley, this is wonderful, thank you for sharing!
Elk are such amazing animals. I love to see them and never cease to be amazed at how loud they can be.
Wonderful pictures. Elk were introduced to a wilderness area adjacent to the Glade, but I have yet to actually see one in person.
