One evening we headed downtown.....
I packed up my wine backpack with "spirits" and cheese. (Special thanks to one of my friends for getting us this gift for our wedding - best gift ever!)
And we headed to the town pavilion to listen to the local orchestra play a summer concert.
They played a tribute to Frank Sinatra as well as many other favorites. My in-laws loved it. (On the other hand, my pre-teen nephew and stepson were begging for ice cream money but I think they managed to listen to a few tunes...)
Now I must admit, I wasn't sure if I should have brought my wine backpack. (Greg's mom was glad I did! Ha!) And during the concert, I noticed this elderly lady staring at me and my backpack. At the end of the concert she approached me and I thought "uh oh, I offended someone." Instead she smiled and said "now that's the way to enjoy a summer concert!" I knew I loved this town......

That's exactly the way I would enjoy it! We have one of those backbacks (ours is only for two, wish it was for four) that we bought when we visited the wine country in Ca a few years ago. We go to a local concert every so often on Saturday night called Shindig on the Green. Technically pets, drinking and smoking are prohibited, but every one is very tolerant of pets and a bottle of wine....not so much the smoking.

I love seeing some of the sights around your cabin. Daisy in OH attended a similar event in her town - her son plays in the orchestra. Looks like gorgeous weather and a great crowd. Funny about tastes in music - cute about the boys wanting ice cream instead of listening to the older tunes!
I love it, Shelley.... What could be better than a small town concert ---and some wine and cheese??? WOW---sounds like paradise to me!!!!!

As one who lives in a small town year round, I can really appreciate this post, Shelley. Sounds like you had a lovely time. :)
I don't think there is any place better than a small town. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert (and the wine and cheese).

I love all of these small town events. To me they are better then a vacation. Sigh... A beautiful evening, wonderful entertainment, and a delicious red wine! It doesn't get better than that....

How wonderful! Love the picnic kit, I saw one at a shop like it recently too...we have "music at the park" down the street from us on the lake every Wed. night for two months every summer here too...I love it...they serve desserts for a donation and they are all homemade by ladies in town...gotta love a small town and the music is anything from the blues, to polkas to country to rock 'n roll....I look forward to it every year!

We live in a small rural town also and it is true... the people are definitely friendlier than in a larger city area. So glad you enjoyed your local concert!! Sounds like a nice outing! I would have really enjoyed all those tunes!!

Hello! This is my first visit to your blog...actually I was searching the net for pictures of chipmunks to show my daughters. I grew up in Michigan where chipmunks abound, but my Florida-born daughters have never had a real-life sighting. Not only did I find a picture of "your" chipmunk, but I spotted one of the prettiest small town pictures. It looked familiar to me, not so much the buildings themselves, but the style. A quick search of your blog...VOILA...it's Gaylord, MI! I lived in Gaylord during my middle school years (1976) and have always wanted to move back. I loved living in Gaylord and miss all that it offered...snow, winter sports, family trips to Fred Bear Museum in Grayling, the fall color change, trees other than palm trees... :-) I hope you don't mind, but I'll be popping by from time to time to get my Gaylord-Fix. Keep the pictures coming!
