Bird Watching at the Cabin

I decided today would be a good day to bird watch from the deck of our cabin. I pulled up a chair and got my camera ready. It was kind of nice to take a break from stressing over what hasn't been finished. (I think the electrician must double as a spy as he's been very elusive and I still don't have my switchplates. ) I hung up a suet cake and tube feeder on the trees overhanging the deck. The Black-capped chickadees were rampant. I put seeds in my hand and one of them landed on my thumb. He didn't take the seed, just cocked his head at me and flew back to the feeder. Just that experience was thrilling enough. Bird count total today: 10 chickadees, 1 tufted titmouse, 2 white breasted nuthatches and 1 hairy woodpecker. Tomorrow, back to the log cabin...

So, where are you living while building? We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment with our 3 kids!! CRAMPED! I can still remember when we had a working toilet in here for the first time, it was exciting. It symbolized a major step closer to moving in! You are getting there!

That is so cool. I love birdwatching as well. One of my favorite indoor places to go is The Chippewa Nature Center in Midland. I could sit for hours watching. I love the wild turkeys that come to feed.

Hi Fellow Log Cabin Dwellers, We too live in a log cabin that we built in 1980. It started out to be our summer cabin, then in 1994 we moved in the cabin permantly and added an addition. We love the feel of all the wood. We cut our own trees on our property, and built the cabin as a family project. See us at www.cabinhaus.blogspot.com Leave a comment!!! Enjoy !!!

How exciting! I love to watch the litter tweeters, that what I call them, feed and try to dominate one another. They know my routine now and as soon as I open my back door and fly to the trees and wait for me to fill the bird feeders. My husband thinks I have too many feeders but I catch him watching the guys sometimes.

We love the picture of the Black-capped chickadee, they are plentiful in Texas where I am from. We are now in East Yorkshire in the UK. We have lots and lots of pheasants and we have written about them in our blog. We too are nature lovers like yourselves. Readers of your blog may also have an interest in our blog on camping and fishing with your dog in Texas, http://campfishdogtexas.blogspot.com

I've always wanted to build a log cabin up in the woods of our Montana land. That dream is gone for me now, but I love living vicariously through you and your experiences!

Cute bird picture! I enjoy birdwatching a bit in my spare time, but I don't have the patience to watch for hours.

I think what you're doing is great, and I like the log-cabin idea of bringing nature inside the home.

Lovely! I noticed your Thoreau comment on the front page. Do you know Thoreau's quote about the thrill of a bird landing on his shoulder? How wonderful that you are in nature and nature also visits you.

llb - now I'm going to have to search for that Thoreau quote on the bird - it will be pefect for my birding blog. (Especially as I love Thoreau.) Thank you for the heads up!
