My dream living room for a log home

When we were up in Munising for log home training, I got to snap some photos of Hiawatha's (our log home provider)log home studio where they are headquartered. I just love their living room with all the log accents in the ceiling, tall fieldstone fireplace, the way the track lighting is arranged and how the dormer windows add more space. Check out that huge wrought iron chandelier! Maybe in my next log home....

Shelley, been meaning to ask how long it actually took you to build the Loon's Nest?

My first home went up in 4 months, everything needed for a C.O. was finished, but there was still interior doors and molding to put on. But...I was hoping for the same time schedule this time around and I simply can not get a feel for how we are progressing. I know that once we are weather-tite rain days won't be such a hassle. I honestly don't if we can make the 4 months this time around.

Any guide lines to share?

Hi Rick & Dianne -
We took delivery the 2nd week week of November and were ready for inspection by the end of March - so approx 4-5 months. I thought this was pretty remarkable due to us being in the snowbelt - our crew was shoveling snow out of the cabin and racing to get the roof on so I'm sure that sped things up by building in the winter. However - we had to wait until June to do the staining and we are just starting to tackle mini-landscaping (we're waiting till fall to plant the bushes.) I'll have to go back to your blog and see when your project 1st started - but how long has it been now to get you to this point?

We took delivery on May 19 and our builder started May 20 with the cap and the basement wall. A Lok N Log rep arrived for technical assistance on May 28 and the first course was laid that day. It would have been sooner but the early Memorial Day Holiday held us back a few days.

We seemed to be going along pretty fast until it came time for the beginning of the ceiling and roof. I guess when you are out there every day and don't see too much progress you begin to doubt the timeline.

Thanks....I feel better!!!

That is lovely - but don't short change yours, it is very nice!! 4 months seems amazingly fast - we did everything ourselves, but didn't even have the logs all raised at 4 months!

This is a beautiful room! But I think any log home room is. :)

Are you training to be a log home rep for Hiawatha?

Rick & Dianne - I do think your project is moving along pretty good!

Reliv - I would like to see some photos of when you did your log raising - that would be neat to see!

Bobbi - I'm jealous of that fireplace too!

Jen - I am - I know I'm crazy but I just love log homes!

Hi Shelly,
I have been out of pocket lately (summer is hectic)and trying to catch up!

The staining turned out great! It really "completes" the cabin! I have enjoyed all of the pictures you share! Although we are still a ways off from building our retirement cabin, I am all enthusiastic about our eventual goal!

I really liked Mr Fox. It would actually look great anywhere in the cabin! Good thing it's a pheasant in his mouth and not a loon!

Speaking of loons...My best friend Brenda loves loons! Her husband Charlie and my husband Dave are best friends as well. (Our sons are named after them, they have David Charles and we have Charles David). Anyway...their family has a cabin up on Lake of the Woods in Sioux Narrows, Ontario. This is where Brenda fell in love with loons! One year I cross stitched her a large picture of a pair of loons with a baby on one of their backs. I have to say it turned out awesome! I also have to say I haven't picked up a needle since!

Our family is joining their family Aug 1st for a week up in Sioux Narrows. We have rented a cabin on the other side of the lake from theirs. I can not wait to sit in my Adirondack chair on the boat dock, with my book and listen to their calls out on the water!

Does it get any better than this?

Connie

PS
I love the dishes from KOHL's! Here is a link to my dishes that I got 2 years ago. I use them occasionally for now but am saving to use them once we build!

Love the idea of a big chandelier! We're using our living room as a dining room (we have a family room in the basement, so the living room is redundant) and are looking at big elk or deer antler chandeliers to have hanging from that high ceiling over the table.

Chris - watching your wonderful addition has given me ideas!

Connie - your weekend sounds great - especially sitting in the adirondack chairs & listening to loons!

Jennifer - your layout sounds very cool and functional!

The warmth of the wood is always so moving to me. Probably because when I was a little girl we lived in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and had many friends that had log homes like this one. Brings back great memories.
