Landscaping the Log Cabin

We've been doing our own landscaping at the log cabin the last few weeks. There are many things I want (a patio outside the walkout basement, steps to the lake, etc.) but with the economy the way it is, I am holding onto our money a little tighter as well as seeing what we can do ourselves. All those other things we want can come at a later date.

Greg built some flower boxes and will fill them with blooms that will attract butterflies and birds. The 2 birds this man has really wanted to see at our cabin are the Wood Duck (which we finally saw a couple weeks ago - yea!) and a hummingbird. I hope the hummingbird cooperates for him! (P.S. If any of Greg's friends are reading this, please don't make fun of him for liking birds. I need him as my bird spotter!) Here are a few things we've done:

All of our rocks were free! We collected them down 2 track roads in our ATV. It was a lot of work but saved us a ton of money!

Here are some Gerbera Daisies I picked up for the deck. I think they are such happy looking flowers.

Here's a little primrose plant I picked up for our patio table.

P.S. To any of my blogger friends who may have made purchases from my Nature Store - please email me at shelleyupnorth at gmail dot com. Unfortunately Zazzle doesn't show me who orders and I would like to properly thank you as well as enter you in a drawing for another extra gift! Thank you so much!!!

Good evening Shelley, I love your stone path way. It's so pretty. The flowers are going to look beautiful on your patio and deck. Yes, money is tight right now and it's good that you know how to do some of the things yourselves. Besides, I always loved working on projects with the hubby although he calls me the supervisor LOL I hope you have a great evening. Give little Marvin a hug from us ♥

Your outdoors are looking lovely! Wow - you guys did a lot of work hauling those rocks! We happen to have an over abundance of rocks in our yard and entire town - if only they weighed less, I'd ship you some! I know what you mean about having to put off some of the landscaping projects due to the economy. That part is really hard for my landscaping husband - the waiting that is - he'd like to install it all NOW!

Shelley, Whatever big or little project you do at the cabin, it is fun to have you share it with us. I like the way this pathway looks...it fits the cabin decor perfectly. Gerbera daisies and primroses add exquisite beauty to everything. Your photography captures it all in such a professionally done way, and we receive the benefit of viewing it. Thank you!

I love Gerberas! Living in Texas, it took us a long time to find the right kinds of flowers to plant in our yard factoring in shade (or the lack of) and so on. We still wind up losing something throughout the summer because it burns up. As our trees have matured and created some shade it has helped. Surprisingly our Columbines do fabulous but that's because they're shaded a lot during the day. Those are some of my favorites! I'm a tad jealous, we're supposed to hit 90 again today! UGH!

It looks like you are off to a great start on the landscaping...I love the rocks and great idea to pick them up! The flowers box is great! I have herbs in my flower boxes and the sage & thyme are blooming right now I love to touch them when I pass just to get that wonderful Earthy auroma!

those flowers are really lovely! landscaping is something we have done in small increments... it is hard to get it all done. I remember a long time ago the pictures of Greg picking up all those rocks - I have to admit, I laughed a little bit at him - but boy, I am not laughing now - they look lovely!

Great flower picks! :D

I may not have to plant any flowers this years--my bird seed is sprouting Everywhere nicely.

That looks like a dream... I can only dream of such a place :)
Amazing flowers, the smell must be intoxicating (I mean that in a good way)!

Love the flowers. Very nice! And it's great that your husband likes birds...you guys can go birding together when you need a break from landscaping. Looking forward to more pics as the landscape progresses!

Those flowers are gorgeous and will look so pretty outside of your house.
We did a similar stone retaining wall outside our house too...If you put dirt between the rocks and plant some creeping phlox and some other little plants it will make a beautiful little rock garden. We even took some tiny wildflowers from the woods and stuck them between the rocks and they worked and look great too!

Looks great so far! We love the stones up in N. Michigan so much that we always haul some back with us to Ohio after our trip up to the lake! Can you believe it?

We get hummingbirds at the cottage up on Walloon, so hopefully they will show up for Greg (and you)!
