Priceless

Bear with me here....

Cost of a rawhide dog bone.......$3.95

Cost of gas to race 100 mph to the emergency vet clinic once I realized my dog was sick from the rawhide....$10.00

Cost of visit, x-rays, bloodwork and pills......$550.
And yes, this is Scout's x-ray.

Cost of knowing my baby girl is going to be okay.......PRICELESS!!!

And I didn't even mention the cost of the carpeting I'm going to have to replace because of the puppy vomit and diarrhea. Or the xanax pills I had to pop cuz I thought I was going to lose her. No - just kidding about the pills.....(Greg reads my blog ya know.....ha!)

So thankful and happy for you that Scout is alright! I can understand how upsetting this must of have been! You've got me concerned too, because Buck gets a raw hide bone every other night.
Again, I'm happy to hear your beautiful Scout is on the mend!
Blessings to you!

Oh my goodness. What an ordeal. I am glad she is OK. Did she swallow the whole thing or what? Well, no more dog bones I guess.

I stopped giving Buster the rawhide bones when I read on a blog about dogs that they can't digest then and have trouble going to the bathroom, why do they sell those things if they can be harmful is beyond me!

I'm so glad Scout is okay, the picture of her at the vet is just heartbreaking to me:( I would have been just as upset believe me.

Oh my gosh...I am so glad that Scout is going to be ok. I used to give Cocoa those too and she scared me cause she would eat them so quick...scary.
Hope you are calmed down now. Take care, Suz

Oh My Goodness Shelley... How scary!!! I'll bet you were a 'basket-case' going through that... Saving your precious baby is definitely is worth a million dollars--or whatever you have to pay...

I've never heard of that happening with rawhide bones. They need to be BANNED...

Hugs,
Betsy

I'm so glad your baby is ok. How scary, a rawhide bone? I give my Banjo rawhides ever so often, and/or beef basted natural bones.
Should I stop???

Oh no! Hope she feels better soon---I gave up on those rawhide chews--not a good thing--ITs amazing how much health care for animals has risen, Im so glad she got the care she needed!..imagine an out of work family in the same situation.
She sure has grown into a beautiful dog!!

Constance said...

WOW! I can't imagine how horrible that would be! I am glad she's okay! I guess rawhide should come with a disclaimer huh? Who would've thought a dog would get that sick from it? Can she do pig ears? I can't get past the smell but my grand-dogs love them!
Feel better soon, pretty girl!

I am so glad Scout is ok. I don't give Sasha those anymore because it always seemed like she would chew off a big piece and choke on them. I agree with the other lady who posted... why do they make these things if they are so dangerous to our babies?

Give Scout a big hug!

Oh you guys must have been so worried! I'm very glad Scout is okay! Some dogs do fine with rawhide, others don't. I've been hearing more and more stories like Scout's. :(

Give your sweet girl a kiss from me and take a hug for yourself.

Awww Poor Scout! And poor you, too! I'm so sorry - She must be allergic to the rawhide? Jeez - She looks so sad, but at least she's going to be ok!

I'm so glad she is okay. Those puppies are something else hey? Just like kids. I had to do a double take at that vet picture and thought, "hmmm, what army veterinary hospital did she use?"
Sorry your bill was so high but someone has to pay for the digital xray machine. LOL!

I can't imagine how fearful that was for you. I am so glad that Scout is okay, and that you survived without the pills. I never heard of this happening. I will be sure to tell my friends with dogs for pets. I love happy ending stories.

Oh my gosh, I never knew raw hide bones were dangerous. Charli has never like them. I'm so glad Scout is doing OK. I can imagine how upset you and your hubby were. Poor Scout ♥ Charli is sending hugs.

Teeny - thank you! I will never feed Scout a rawhide again. She had swallowed some big pieces that made her extremely ill! Be careful w/ Buck!

Blushing Rose - I have learned my lesson the hard way! :-)

Blessedmom - Thank you! I was even monitoring her while she was chewing on it - but it wasn't good enough!

Mildred - It was so scary! I gave her a hug for you - thank you!!

Grammy - she had swallowed some sharp chunks that didn't digest quick enough and it made her violently ill. Today she is bouncing around like nothing happened - go figure! LOL!

Penny - thank you! I was crying my heart out driving her to the vet and am so relieved that everything ended up ok! :-)

Rondell - I wish I had known more about those rawhides! Oh - and that vet photo is just one I found on the website - sorry that I posted such a scary photo. The x-ray is hers though.

Busy Bee Suz - I think I finally had my zen moment today - lol! She is doing much better! :-)

Patsy - I didn't know either about those bad rawhides! She is banned from them forever now!

Betsy - I agree w/ you 100%! They should have warnings - in fact I don't think they should sell them at all. Today was a much better day, Scout was running around like her ole self.

Lillie Mae - I would stop! I was even monitoring Scout - always taking away her bones when I thought they got too small - and it still wasn't enough. The vet said some dogs can handle and some can't. It would've been an expensive surgery if it hadn't passed thru her.

Catherine - you are right - she is worth every penny! She's my baby!

Sandi - thank you! I think I have more gray in my hair now! lol!

Kath - thank you! And I've missed you too!!

Wixy - Scout loves our kitty's food too! :-)

Dixie - you are right! Animal costs are thru the roof! I just signed up for pet insurance - I have a feeling I'm going to need it!

Hi Connie - I'm going to stay away from bones period for her! Her stomach obviously can't handle it. I guess this means she gets extra treats - lol!

Goat Greek Grandma - thanks for the hug to Scout! I really think people need to be aware of the dangers of these rawhides!

Cedar - thank you!

Wendy - I was a wreck! Now I'm back to normal....

Heather - thank you! I was so afraid I was going to lose her when I was driving to the vet! Thank goodness they were able to help her!

Knatolee - we'll gladly take your hugs! We'd also like your kittys hugs too! :-)

Tricia - it was just too rough and sharp for her - got stuck! She's back to normal today - :-)

DVM Wife - thank you! Sorry for that vet photo - that was one I found on the internet - needed to show how traumatized I was - lol! But the x-rays hers. And yep, you're right - had to pay for that machine - lol! It was worth every penny - they did such a great job w/ Scout and I'm just happy she's okay. I'm kicking myself right now!

Judy - I was so glad this had a happy ending too! And yes - please tell your friends. Just because the package says the rawhide is digestable - it isn't the case for all dogs. I'd hate to think of another pooch going thru what Scout did.

Star- thank you! And we are insured NOW! (But wasn't before, I meant to do it sooner...)

How AWFUL!!
Thank goodness you got her help in a hurry and that she is okay now.
I used to give our dogs those all the time, I thought they were ok.
We don't have a dog now, but I won't use them in the future if we get another dog, that's for sure!

Shelley just seeing this!! I am so glad Scout is OK. I am sorry you all had to go through this but I am sure your post will warn and help others. Whew! Scary! Hug your Scout Girl and hold her tight!

I'm so glad she is ok. Many of us know full well the fear when our pets are sick.

Shelly, I should email you sometime about my little Genie. She is only 8 and half of her life so far has been rare diseases and fighting for her life. The investment in her financially is unreal and to some they think we are nuts...but to us she is our child. I cant even begin to describe how I feel each time she triumphs over a new fight.

I know your hugging your dog!

Jen said...

Yikes! Glad to hear Scout is better. What did the vet say about giving those to dogs?

Ginger said...

Shelley, I was just reading Karen's blog and she mentioned that Scout had a trip to the ER. I know how scary that is for all of you.
My dog loves those rawhide chewies and I guess I better be careful with them. They want to swallow them before they are chewed up all the way.
Glad Scout is okay and you are too.
(I would of taken the Xanax, lol)

Ohmygosh Shelley! How horrible for you going through all of this and little Scout too. I've realized that my dogs cannot tolerate any of the dog bones that look so delicious at the Pet Store. We had one get a bit sick but nothing like what you went through. Thank goodness she (and you!) will be all right! Hugs, Coralie

oh poor scout. so glad she's going to be ok. i never feed those rawhide bones - they get slimy and slippery and the dogs swallow them whole. hugs to scout and you.

Shelley, so sorry you and Scout went through this. No more rawhides for rex either. we've had to run to the vet a few times with him (none due to rawhides) and i dont need another experience with him because of rawhides. thanks for the warning and have a wonderful safe weekend with that cutie :-)

Oh no! Thank goodness Scout is ok. I made all of Benny's food (and treats) but every once in a while he would get a raw hide bone as a "treat" ...I had no idea they could be a problem! Big hug to Scout ♥

Sorry to hear about Scout, but we are relieved that he is recovering. A couple months ago Kaiser got hit by a car. Thankfully he walked away from it. We had the same frantic visit to the emergency vet.

Lucky dogs!!!
