My childhood nightmares

Before I became a nature lover and tree hugger, I did have some irrational fears as a child. You already know about my dragonfly phobia. I was convinced they would bite me AND sting me at the same time.

Also, did anyone else have their mom and/or relatives tell them not to look caterpillars in the eye? I'm trying to figure out if I'm the only one who believed this crazy tale! I have a sinking feeling.....

Anyways, I'm proud to say I'm over the dragonfly and caterpillar thing. Now the snakes and spiders.......NEVER!!! (P.S. What insect or animal are you afraid of? I can't be the only scaredy cat....)

I guess I hate snakes the most and if I ever see them on TV, then I have nightmares about them. When we first moved to Nalley Valley, John bought some Powder that you sprinkle in a circle around your home to keep snakes away. It was the most horrible smelling stuff I have ever smelled. I'd rather have snakes than to have smelled that!

I don't like bees!! And, I'm a gardener. Maybe it's because I'm allergic to them!!!

I don't even know where the eyes are on the caterpillars!!!
SPIDERS. Spiders are the spawn of satan. I am sure of this.

How funny, Shelley! I was always told that if a dragonfly lands on you, you are a very blessed and lucky person and that it will bring you even more luck.
Me? I hate hornets and wasps!

Well I never heard that about caterpillars!

I give spiders and snakes a wide berth if at all possible. :)

I had never heard that about caterpillars, Shelley... Glad I never looked one in the eye!!!! ha

I am afraid of snakes and spiders... And--when I lived in Florida and Texas, we had those horrible flying Palmetta Bugs.... I can shiver now just thinking of those nasty things...

Bears - once backpacking one came to our camp and pulled down our packs from the tree. Ever since I'm not very comfortable camping in the woods. - Margy

I really dislike all insects, but really can not abide by cockroaches (la cucaracha). Never knew what they were until I moved to Arizona at age 19. Those things are hideous, ugly, hard shelled and dumb. In Pennsylvania as a kid I was always scared to death of the daddy-long-legs (spiders) and of course my wicked sister used to throw them on me any chance she got. Thanks for dredging up these awful memories Shelley. Can I send some garter snakes your way?? hehe.

Your picture of the catepillar brought back memories for me. My brothers would collect them in a paper cup and chase me and my sisters with them. I don't have a real fear of any insects like I do of mice. I can't tell you what it does to me to see them. Nothing affects me like they do. Great post.

I HATE REPTILES! All of them. Don't get them near me - not even a frog. Snakes scare the he#* out of me. I'll run and run. (Thus the reason I don't do much gardening t this house - too many slithery things - {{yuck}} )
And dragon flys are the most annoying bug. Especially when you are swimming. They are determined to land on you!
{{ugh}}
Right now, I'm trying to deal with a teeny tiny baby bunny who is living in my yard. It is eating everything in sight, and pooping everywhere too! my two dogs are eating it ALL! what is it with bunny poop and dogs? So I'm on a mission to clear it out, but feel so bad, it's so tiny. UGH! NO clue what to do! I've fenced off my yard to keep them out, and now this little one is stuck in! UGH!

Roaches. All of them. All kinds. Flying ones in particular. They make me scream like a little school girl.

Cool pictures Shelley!

Skunks! I still have a fear since the 2007 spraying of my dogs. Especially since it ran under the porch and was there for 3 days keeping me captive in my own house. I will never understand the reason for creating them.

I hate snakes too, and definitely have an abnormal fear of bees. Of course, they seem to follow me. My kids just laugh at me when I start running :-)
I remember being told that about caterpillars too.
Blessings,
Marcia

I read your post and the song 'Spiders and Snakes' by Jim Stafford popped into my head! lol I have always had the biggest fear of any type of bee/wasp and since we moved into this old house I have a new fear... they are called 'cave crickets'. I had never saw one till we came here. I thought it was a spider at first and when it jumped a few feet into the air at me it scared the 'you know what' out of me!!!

*hugs*

Funny...I thought Dragonflies could sting when I was very, very small! Still uncomfortable with snakes so give them a wide berth.

Not so much the snakes, mind you that is only when they are behind glass and I know they can't get to me. They move to fast and startle my in nature though. Spiders are such a phobia of mine that I can hardly look at an image of them without freaking out. I believe this to be an inherited trait though as my granny is afraid of them from being bit by a cotton spider when she was younger and almost losing her arm. But as a child I was more leary of many different insects and critters although now I am more fascinated by them than anything that is except those icky icky spiders.

Centepeides (sp?) and silverfish! Oh my goodness I absolutely hate them! They creep me out something fierce!

OMG- I cannot believe how much fear is posted here. If it weren't for bugs, we would not have this wonderful planet. That said, I hate any bug that is in my house! Stay outside and we will get along fine, but come inside and bite me and you will die!
