The log home needs a dog...

I figured out another thing that our log home is missing - a dog! We have our cat Marvin who I love dearly....but I don't think he wants to swim in the lake with me. Nor accompany me in the snow when I'm snow shoeing. And I doubt he would protect me from the bears on my walks thru the woods. Yep - I need a dog. Greg agrees but he wants a hunting dog such as a Brittany or English spaniel. I on the other hand want a big working dog and I already know what I want - a Bernese Mountain Dog. They weigh between 80 - 100 pounds, are a good watch dog, loyal and loving to their family, LIKE CATS, can herd (maybe there are goats and ducks in my future!) and loves the snow. They are also easily trained as a search and rescue dog (maybe another career for me?!) I tell my husband all these wonderful qualities and he persists with the following 2 questions: "Will he point?" and "Will he retrieve a bird?" The answer is no and no unless the bird is shaped like a ball. My next tactic is reminding him he only goes pheasant hunting once a year and can borrow the hunting ranches dogs and that when he goes deer hunting, my big beautiful Bernese Mountain dog will happily sit beside him in the deer blind in the cold of winter to keep him company.
Meanwhile, when I was at the wine festival this weekend I saw some people with a Bernese Mountain dog that I have pictured below. It's a sign, I know it! I almost pole vaulted a fence to get to these people's dog to ask them a million questions and pet this sweetie. It's only a matter of time before my hubby succumbs....

Oh yea!!! You know what a dog lover I am. Your log home definately needs a dog. A dog in a log....

One of the Dr's. that I work for has this same dog that you want. He is crazy about him and says they are the best!

I'll be looking for updates!!

It sounds like a Chihuahua is out of the question though. LOL!

What a great looking dog. I hope you can get one soon! Maybe you should both get dogs. That way the pups themselves will have a playmate.

Oh No! Don't ruin it with a dog. Just kidding, I'm a cat person! I have to admit, the dog you have pictured is really pretty.

OH, what a sweet dog! We have a catahoula and she's the best dog we've ever had. Yes, you definitely need a dog!

We had a German shorthair pointer for years, he was a fabulous big dog, and also pointed and retrieved? He was 80 lbs. One thing about any kind of hunting dog, except labs - which I am not a fan of, anyway, hunting dogs are pretty hyper and high maintenance their first few years, then settle down nicely. That is a draw back, and having a chihuahua now, I do NOT miss all those LARGE piles of poop!!

Jessica - I love that saying - "dog in a log" - ha,ha!

Jen - I'm worried the cat might eat the chihuahua! ha!

Dianne - I thought about 2 dogs...

Wendy - my shelter cat actually loves dogs better than other cats so thing the dog will make a great addition.

Catherine - hoping I can convince the hubby soon...

Reliv - my husband also suggested the german short-haired pointer too - they are attractive dogs!

I understand your intent on wanting your kind of dog. That is how I was with our Cocker Spaniel. I wanted a Cocker Spaniel my husband on the other hand wasn't so sure. Just keep working at it look around for reputable breeders and once you found one you think you want go in for the kill. My husband was sold on our Chloe until he walked in the door and saw her. I had gone while he was at work to pick her up. And no I didn't just go and buy a dog without his consent as well as mine. He just still wasn't sure after we agreed to get a dog and decided on this particular breeder. So my advice do all the research that comes with getting/buying a dog and see how things go from there.

Shelley, let Greg get a Springer Spaniel, good for pheasants, ducks and just an all round good dog. That mountain dog is lovely too, but he won't hunt...
Greg, let Shelley get a Bermese Mountain dog. They are friendly lovable big dogs...she will need a dog to keep her company when you are off pheasant hunting with your springer!
