Let's go snow shoeing!

You and I are going to leave the confines of the log cabin today and go snow shoeing in this lovely powdered snow that we have! Are you ready? (Psst - not only is snow shoeing considered one of the fastest growing winter sports, but did you know that you can burn more than 600 calories per hour snow shoeing? Let's work off those cookies I made the other day.)

Dress warmly. Let's go drive over to my in-law's cabin which sits on 20 acres. It will be nice to see the tall green pines. Plus my mother-in-law might feed us later. :-)

Okay, we're on the road. Did you know snow shoes are relatively inexpensive? You can usually pick up a decent pair for under $100. I bought mine from REI.

Time to snap on the snow shoes. It's relatively easy to tighten the bindings. I forgot my poles but I shouldn't need them today because I won't be walking over that many hills.

Let's step into that virgin white snow and make some tracks.

Isn't that a beautiful sight? Let's not trip over that stump up ahead....

The air is crisp and clean. I can hear a Blue Jay off in the distance.

Let's walk a little further. See how the snow is clinging to the pine trees? Can you hear winter's silence?

I'm getting a little hungry and I think you need some hot chocolate. Let's head back down this path. I hope you enjoyed our snow shoeing adventure today - I know I did.

I love it! I have never been snow shoeing before! Of course around here we don't get much snow.
Thanks for the walk. I felt those calories burning right off my hips (lol)!

Wish there'd been enough snow here in KY to do that. Oh well...I hear next weekend maybe...

I love those snow laden pine trees! All I have are a pair of old antique snowshoes that hang on the wall of our lodge room. Stay warm!

Love this post. Everything is so beautiful. Yes, I can hear the quietness. So peaceful, but I thought we were going for a snack at the mother-in-laws house. I was all ready for a snack, and you turned back before we got it.

Oooh FUN! We used to cross country ski when I lived in NY. I loved the silence of the woods broken only by the screaming of my thigh muscles. I remember when I had thigh muscles...

Please, may we have more adventures?

Snowshoeing is great. I used to have an old pr of wooden ones, now have the nice aluminum frame ones. I've been snowshoeing since I was a kid,... we don't have enough snow here yet. I'll meet you out on the trail!

I have never snow-shoed before but that is all about to change! We head to Yellowstone January 2nd for a week, where we will do just that along with some snow-mobiling. We'll end the trip with an all day dog sled adventure!

Thanks for sharing with us! I could almost hear the tranquility and stillness.

I've heard alot about it in recent years. I want to get some and try it out! We dont get as much snow as you do--but still there is enough.

The scenery around you is just amazing.

How fun! I plan on taking a snow shoe making class late this winter. Usually they are offered in Ludington. Your in-laws have a beautiful place to go snow shoeing.

Thanks, I wanted to get in a little exercise today! I enjoyed the scenery!
Your house looks so festive. A log cabin is a great house to decorate for Christmas.

I loved your snow shoeing adventure! I've mentioned getting some snow shoes to Rick a few times. He's of the opinion that we don't really need them. But, I've talked to my nephew who assures me that if I want to walk through the woods in January, the snow shoes will be a MUST HAVE! I've never used them, but I do understand their value in deep snow.

I hope to report back later in the winter that I have my very own pair! LOL...I'm sure Rick will come around when the snow is knee deep and getting around is impossible.

Can I have some whipped cream on my hot chocolate please???

Me and my stainless steel left knee appreciate the exercise. so, what's for dinner at the in law's?

OH SHUCKS! I wish that I had seen your blog before I left for our cabin for Thanksgiving. We would have been happy to have you and your family over for dinner! I certainly made enough food for an army. We'll have to get together one of these weekends. Does your husband like to ice fish? It's Bill's FAVORITE, even before hunting and summer fishing.

What a great post!!! My hubby snow shoes, as does our daughter. After going along on your walk with you I might just try it myself. I can only imaging the sights you see in the woods.

Brandi - Snow shoeing is a lot of fun!

Tri-state - I hope you get some big fluffy snow there (minus the cold and wind!)

Michelle - Ha,ha! It is good for the soul...

Catherine - I've been looking for a pair of wood snow shoes to hang on our cabin walls - love em!

Carol - you're welcome anytime!

Leedra - you must've missed the last photo - i was taking you back to the inlaws for chocolate and food. :-0

Sandi - I have never tried cross country (only have done the downhill) but I do want to try it!

Cedar - I would love to snow shoe in your neck of the woods! It's beautiful!

Connie - Yellowstone is on my list! I bet it would be spectacular to snow mobile and snow shoe thru there!

Dawnie - I think you'd like it - it's really nice for walking on top of deep snow.

Pam - I'm so glad you thought so!

Michele - I was ready to eat a buffet by myself after I went snow shoeing!

Denise - they are also having snow shoe making classes at hartwick pines in grayling - I forget the date but will have to check. Oh - and the hubby is a big fisherman - he tried ice fishing last year and liked it (there was an ice fishing festival on Otsego Lake.) we'll have to talk!!

Picket - I feel the same way - can't think of anything better than decorating this cabin!

NC - there was no wind and we had a little sun to boot! :-0

Dianne - you have to talk him into it - they are fun! My hubby likes it when he has to go further down to fill our bird feeders in the midst of the deep snow.

74 - I'll pull you in the tobaggan next time - or maybe my future Bernese Mountain dog can! (Dinner was enchiladas that day - yum!)

Marnie - thank you for coming by! It just makes the walk in the woods so much nicer when you're floating on the snow! :-)

I loved this time in your winter woods! I truly felt as though I was THERE w/ you! Great series of photos!
I have never snow showed but you have convinced me now!

That is a lot of snow. We have beautiful cabins out here in Arizona, but we typically don't get enough snow to go shoeing in (I live down south)! The pictures added a nice touch to the story.

Oh, thank you. I used to love snowshoeing and now I live in the Land of No Snow Ever (Dallas). This was like taking a wonderful and refreshing mini vacation.
