I love my Loon stuff!

Slowly but surely, my log home is becoming a "loony bin." I'm trying not to overwhelm the decorating with only loon stuff. But then when I'm out and about - I hear the call of the Loon!

Here's a tapestry I recently picked up at the Call of the Wild Museum in Gaylord, MI.

Here are keys to the loony bin! Ha!

How about a cookie from my Loon cookie jar? By the way, I haven't put any cookies in here yet. Do you have any good cookie recipes you've come across recently?

This photo represents one of nature's miracles. Sometimes at the end of the summer, the Loons will have a social hour and gather on a host lake. It will usually only happen for 1 day. They will swim in synchronized circles - almost like a dance and dip their heads in the water, mimicing each other. The chances of seeing this are pretty rare. Which is why when I witnessed this a few years ago, it became one of the best nature experiences of my life. Have you ever had a moment like this?

In wilderness I sense the miracle of life, and behind it our scientific accomplishments fade to trivia. ~Charles A. Lindbergh, Life, 22 December 1967

I have a "thing" for wall tapestry and I love your loon with the babies taking a ride! Your Loon things are darling! Adding things to a house to make it home and your own is always fun!

It's great to follow a theme and why not loons? I like your cookie jar very much. As to making them? if I was you, I'd take a walk to Krogers. They have such a great range - maybe you can't get to Krogers from the hut. Are you very isolated?

One early June a few years ago I witnessed the competition between two male loons for a female on a large lake in northern Quebec.

What started as competing loon calls at opposite ends of the lake culminated in an in-and-out-round-about chase centered on the small islands in front of our fishing cabin as one male chased the other all over the otherwise still lake. For over half an hour we sat on the porch and watched these two loons run across the water's surface in huge figure eights that ranged half a mile to our left and another half mile to our right. All the while the female placidly continued to paddle about and occasionally dive for a fish in the waters between the islands directly in front of us.

It was one heck of an after dinner entertainment that had us all in stitches.

You have introduced me to a world of Loons. I know this sounds hard to believe, but I never heard anything about Loons before I started visiting this blog. Now, if and when I see anything to do with them, I always think of you. You certainly have a nice collection of these beautiful birds. Think how much I am learning from this fascinating nature blog. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Shelley. Love all your "looney" stuff, especially the tapestry. It's interesting how when one manages to find stuff centered on some favorite motif, how very hard it is not to acquire more and more. And then you begin to worry that you might be going a little over the top! But its all very nice. Thanks for posting! ~John

I love loons. Sometimes we get them in Hole in the Wall. It's fun to watch them dive and try to guess where they will reappear. They sure can travel far under water. When we were sitting in camp near Halifax we heard loons calling on the lake next to our camp. It was such a wonderful sound. To me, the call of a loon means I'm home in Canada, even when Canada wasn't my permanent home. - Margy
