- Their wail is a long mournful call that you will most often hear at night. They use it to communicate and keep in touch with other Loons nearby.
- The Tremolo call has 8-10 notes and they will make this noise if they are upset such as if humans or predators are nearby. If you hear this, you are too close to them.
- The "hoot" is a reassuring low one-note call they use to say hello to their family members.
- The yodel is made by the male Loon only and it's made up of rising and repeating notes to protect their territory. If you hear this, you should back away.

Two Loon Videos
These videos go with yesterday's post. I know some of you haven't seen or heard a Loon before so this is for you! Loons have 4 beautiful calls that each have different meanings:

Great videos! I loved the sound in the second one...just beautiful!
About 10 years ago a group of co-workers had a picnic at a remote lake, many of us spent the night in tents for a second day of canoeing. It was the end of July and the whole lake just echo'd with loon "laughter" all night long. that trip is one of my fondest memories.
This so reminds me of when I lived in upstate NY and we would go to the Adirondacks. Loved listening to the loons. What a treat this was. Thank you!

I love their sounds, Shelley. I can certainly understand why you like them so much!!! The ONLY place I have ever heard loons (that I know of) was in "On Golden Pond." That was one of my favorite movies!!!

The call of the loon is almost haunting.When I played the videos both BabyRocketDog & Hootie's ears perked up.Hootie is a little hard of hearing,but the sound of wildlife got his attention.

I heard my first Loon in northern Wisconsin. I was totally mesmerized by the sound.
I almost asked yesterday what they sound like (o: fun to hear them.

Thanks for sharing - That was great. I had never heard a loon before. My husband loves to hear the whipperwills down by the lake during the summer time. The second video put me in mind of the soothing sounds of summer here - Thanks
A couple of years ago, our niece gave me a water "fountain" that also has sound. One that you can listen to is the loons. I love hearing that one. There was another one that our grand-daughter "Jelly Bean" called the Jesus song. It was actually called "sunrise" but the name stuck! Ha Ha!
