Decorating the cabin with history

I love history - especially learning about the early pioneer times. Our log cabin is located in an area which was once a lumbering town in the late 1800's. History of our town reveals there were draft horses pulling stacked logs, log cabins dotting the area and one-room school houses. I went to our local museum this past summer and had them scan some historical photos for me that I could frame and put in our log cabin. I'm going to group them into 2 areas in our home.

Greg hung this first group of photos in our hallway. I just love having this piece of history in our home. My favorite is the horses with the logs. (You can click on the photo to see a larger image.)

What a fantstic idea! I would love to do that but since Dave's hobby is photography, most of his work graces our walls! I am trying to convince him to do some of his stuff as Christmas gifts for people, he is way too modest though. he doesn't think anyone would actually want it! Silly man!

I love history also, Shelley.. That is so neat that you took time to do that. When we were in the Smokies last week, we hiked to the top of a mountain and you'll never guess what we found up there-----------a cemetery. I had to stop and check it out, and it made me wonder about all of the old-time settlers who used to live there. Amazing!!!!

First of all, what were you doing up at 3:30am??? We are near the old logging town of Meredith. Meredith is a ghost town. Our cabin is right off of the 'Meredith Grade' which was the logging railroad between Harrison and Meredith. Oh, and there was a road that went through one end of our lake. You can see the wood planks at the edge of the lake. Someday, I'll get a good pic of them underwater. I need to go to Clare County to get more pics. I have some from the Gladwin Record since they come out with a logging calendar every year.

Never thought of scanning and enlarging! Very nice!
I collected some old postcards of the Gaylord area to frame for our cabin. Even used Ebay and went to some antique shows to find postcards and old advertising pieces, old snowshoes, etc. Gives the cottage a sense of place and time.
Will you be including a photo of the "famous Waters bottle fence"?

Michele - glad you like them too!

Connie - photography is my hobby too. I think photos can make a nice xmas gift!

Betsy - The smokies just sound like a neat place to visit!

Denise - ha,ha - I had the automatic posting set up since I was driving up to the cabin. At 3:30 - I am sound asleep. A logging calendar sounds very cool!

Terri - thanks!

Jackie - your collection sounds very nice! I have to go back to the museum to find a better photo of the bottle fence.

One thing I do enjoy is going around my town and seeing photos depicting the history of it. Does give it it's own local identity.

Penny - glad you think the black frames look good, I was debating on silver metal frames as well. :-)

Naturegirl - thank you! The museum scanned the pictures for me on disk and then I enlarged them at a photo center.

Jen - I'd like to see yours! :-)

74 - I agree!
