The Geek Squad are Geeks!!

Thank you everybody for your comments & advice. The Geek Squad was not able to come through (and they were claiming they did not have all of the tools so I thought well then what's the point of you providing service at best buy?!) They quoted $1600 to send out somewhere else and recover - I don't think so! So we are going to call around and see if someone else can do it. Otherwise it looks like I will be getting a new computer next week and crying over all the photos I lost. I do have an external hard drive but I had only put about 30% of my photos on it. I learned a very hard lesson. Meanwhile I'll be using the hubby's computer when I can, so bear with me. I hope to be back full time next week and catch up with all of your blogs. Have a good weekend. (Greg, when will that dog be here?!)

Shelly..
our computer took a dump, we sent to HP and they were able to save everything!

From now on.. go to Carbonite.com..
I feel soo much better now.. we have millions of Matthew's hospital pics and all pics from his surgeries and I would DIE if I lost them all...
I think it's worth 49 a year.

But do look into sending to have them recover your pics.

$1600?!!! Wow, you can buy a super-duper, whizbang, fancy-schmancy new computer for that kind of dough! Hope you can save your photos at a reasonable cost though. Will miss you till you get back.

Oh Crap Shelley.. I know this just breaks your heart. But--don't put the cart before the horse. I'll bet that someone out there will be able to save your pictures. Don't give up!!!!

Hang in there--and just know that we'll miss you when you are off-line..
Hugs,
Betsy

OH man, that is awful! Unreal, horrible!

I hope you get things settled soon. I do not back up my photos or anything but I really dont have anything that I would consider of value to me. I do have most of my photos on the camera card.

I think that is insane what they wanted for fees...My gosh!

Sorry to hear about your computer. $1600. does seem a little outrageous to fix it. I like your recipe box, it is perfect for your cabin. I may try the pasta dish, great for a Sunday dinner.

I thought I left a comment before, so if it shows up ignore it!

Shelley,

Such a bummer...I really feel for you! I'm so sorry about your photos...that's always been a fear of mine. Maybe, just maybe, all won't be lost!

Hurry back...I'm still hoping for a dog for you! :)

Check the yellow pages,.... don't do anything hasty. When i had my computer salvaged and got all my photos and files back it was a local guy who was in the phone book. I asked around, others had used him. so there i was,.... saved! Good luck,.... don't take Geek's answer as final ... not yet. I sure hope you can get your pics!

I've had questions about Geek Squad -- now I have even more. $1600 is truly outrageous, Hopefully you will be able to get all your pictures for much less. Who provides tech services where your husband works?

I'm not sure exactly what happened to your computer (this is the first post I've read here), but it sounds like you are unable to read from your hard drive? If so, there are programs out there that can recover a decent amount of the data.

The same thing happened to me - lost so many pictures. I also learned the tearful way. Now I back up to external HD at the end of every month. Condolences and good luck finding a solution.

Hi Shelley:
Sorry the geeks weren't able to fix your computer. I sure wouldn't pay that much money..you can buy 2 computers for that price.
Hope you can find someone else to take a look at it.

Shelley...yikes! Sounds like Best Buy is using you to solve their economic downturn single handedly. I hope you can find an alternative service to save your pics and get you up and running quickly and economically. We will miss your posts until then.

Shelley, I'm so sorry to hear about your computer crashing. Mine's on the verge of crashing too (I've been getting the dreaded "blue screen" from time to time lately, so I know that the crash is coming). Luckily I have Norton Ghost to back up my system to an external hard drive, and it's already saved my bacon once. I've highly recommend it. Hmm...sounds like a good idea for a blog post...

I am so sorry for you, Shelley! I lost photos, too, and now I use to save them periodically on CDs...
Good luck,
Monica x.

We had something similar happen to us a couple of years ago and we found a local, small business guy who was able to repair and salvage a lot of our files, very reasonably priced! My main concern was my Genealogy Research Files and my picture files. He saved those for me and to this day, has my undying gratitude!

I DO believe a puppy would make it all better!

I know how I would feel if this happend to me, Shelley. :((( You have all my sympathy. I'm a Mac girl so I don't have much advice, but I sure wish/hope someone can help, and for less than $1600 (that is OUTRAGEOUS!)

I'm going to get an external drive but for now I burn DVDs of my photos regularly and have Gordon take them to his office so they are not in the house. I also don't wipe my flash cards until I've backed up my photos.

I so feel for you... all your beautiful photography!!!!

The geek sqad is a total rip-off!

I found that out a couple years ago. And no, they didn't do the work for me either. I went elsewhere.

I use thumb drives, and external hard drive to keep everything on. The cost of an SD card is pretty cheap too, so I keep alot of my photos on the card in the camera. I'll transfer them eventually but only to the thumb drive and external HD.

I do hope you can recover your photos.

$1600? Wow! I don't blame you. I hope you are able to recover your pictures! Computers are wonderful when they work, but how frustrating they can be in times like this!

Shane & Casey - thank you for those links! My hubby's cousin is going to try to retrieve it - if he's unsuccessful, then I'm going to try the ones you sent! :)
